The Guinigi Palace and Tower

The Guinigi Palace is an imposing structure, whose Gothic features are noteworthy. It is built of red bricks with stone arches and columns on the ground floor, and triforium and quadriforium windows with ogival arches on the upper floors. The arches of the open loggia on the ground floor were, however, built up in the 1500’s by the Guinigi family.

The tower, adjacent the Palace , was built not so much for defensive purposes, but rather to attract attention, admiration and even envy. They derive in fact from a noble family of Feudal Lords.

In the 13th Century, the Guinigi were merchants of great renown.
